Designation

A flotation pump makes aeration of the pumped liquid possible. Depending on the process requirements water flow may be enriched by carbon dioxide, nitrogen, oxygen, chlorine of any other gas instead of air. In this case a gas container is connected to an air-intake line.

Operation concept.

The pump operation is based on hydrodynamic mechanisms. The incoming water flow moves through a suction line. Vacuum generated in the pump body sucks air through an airline. Liquid flow aeration simplifies oil, fat and oil product separation. They come to the surface together with air bubbles and form flotation complexes on water table; these complexes are removed manually or with the help of automatic scrapers. Waste waters containing fibrous and flaky inclusions are treated in a similar way.

Flotation pump design:

A flotation pump is enclosed into one-piece body. Shutoff valves and instrumentation are installed on piping. Depending on requirements a nomenclature of shutoff valves and their operation may significantly differ. This difference allows for arrangement of a system which is efficient and safe in operation.

Scope of application:

  • Reagent blending units;
  • Water treatment systems in which flotation technologies are used (fats and vegetable oils in food industry and livestock product production, oil products and mineral oils in industry, wastes of paper industry enterprises);

Background. What is flotation?

Flotation fundamentals are based on introduction of air (gas) bubbles into water; these bubbles mix with insoluble particles of a contaminant contained in water. Foamy sludge accumulates on water surface and is removed from it. Pressure flotation falls under physical water treatment methods since secondary (additional) reagents are not used in the flotation process. Water is saturated with gas under high pressure. During pressure flotation procedure water is clarified by removal of suspended particles. A pressure flotation unit is a container partitioned into two zones. In the first zone airfloccules (suspended particles stuck to gas bubbles) are generated. Suspension with airfloccules overflows to the second zone of the container and foam containing impurities is removed from its surface. Clarified water is discharged from the chamber lower part. Currently treatment systems based on water flotation concept are widely used both for industrial and domestic water wastes. Such widespread use is due to high treatment efficiency. During waste water short-term treatment (about 20-40 minutes) up to 98% degree of purification is achieved relative to removal of insoluble impurities. Flotation waste water treatment is an efficient technique not only for removal of insoluble particles but decrease in concentrations of surfactants, microorganisms and bacteria thus simplifying further effluent treatment. Pressure flotation even in a standard process helps to decrease significantly surfactant concentration (up to 50%). Pressure flotation combined with water enhancing aeration results in 80% efficiency of surfactant removal. The water treatment flotation unit ensures simplification of the water treatment system process flow diagram based on the flotation method by means of a standard circulating pump free of additional units to be used: a compressor, a pressure tank, etc. Water is saturated with gas bubbles directly in the flotation unit body. Water is being saturated with gas, suspended particles and gas bubbles are being mixed on a continuous basis, consequently the entire volume of water being treated is filled with gas bubbles thus improving treatment efficiency. It is possible to adjust bubble quantity and dimensions for various types of contaminants.
