    Designation of strainers.

    Flanged coarse strainers designed for water treatment remove mechanical inclusions of various types from water. The size of retained particles is determined by overall dimensions of filter elements cells - filter wire cloth.
    Flanged filters are integrated into main pipelines and ensure cleaning of passing water flow on a continuous basis.

    Design and operation concept of strainers with flushing.

    Water strainer is designed in the form of a cylindrical body inside of which a filter wire cloth is located; the cloth is folded into a cylinder. Water flow enters inside the filter element. All contaminants are retained on its internal surface. Water cleaned out of impurities goes into the body external part and passes further to the filter outlet.
    During operation volume of sludge generated on internal surface of wire cloth gradually increases. The filter capacity decreases. Periodic cleaning of the filter is required for the purpose of restoring to its working condition.


    Filter may be flushed in several modes:
    • hand;
    • semiautomatic;
    • automatic.

    Instrumentation, control devices and actuating members are included additionally into the filter design depending on the flushing technique.

    Strainers with flushing (hand filters).

    Flanged hand filters are flushed as their capacity decreases or at certain specified time intervals.
    For flushing the filter is shut off from water mains. The body is disassembled and the wire cloth is removed from it. The wire cloth is cleaned manually with the help of a brush or under pressurized water, in such a way accumulated contaminants are removed from the wire cloth. Upon completion of cleaning the equipment is reassembled in reverse order and is put into operation.

    Semiautomatic filters.

    A turning handle with rotary brushes and a drain connection are added for semiautomatic flushing; retained mechanical impurities are removed through such drain connection.
    For operating personnel there is no need to shut off the filter from water mains during the flushing procedure. Internal surface of the filter cartridge is cleaned by rotation of the cleaning mechanism turning handle with a drain channel opened. The entire procedure takes 10-15 seconds, after that the drainage closes and the equipment changes to its main mode.

    Automatic filters

    Automatic flushing is a fully hands-free operation. Such operation mode may be activated due to installation of a control unit, differential pressure transmitters and control valves. When pressure differential achieves 0.8-1.0 bar a control signal is generated and transmitted to the actuating element which initiates flushing.
    Filters may be directly cleaned mechanically with the help of rotary brushes or nozzles.
    Upon control signal reception mechanical brushes located inside a filter bowl start to rotate and clean working surface. Sludge is removed via a drainage system. Pressure in water mains remains unchangeable.
    The other flushing mechanism is implemented with the help of vacuum. A flushing pressure-operated valve opens upon achievement of the pressure differential required. Vacuum generated in a hydraulic drive working chamber makes a central axis (with vacuum nozzles installed on it) rotate. While rotating contaminants located close to nozzles are sucked up inwards and discharged into the drainage. Nozzle pitch is calculated in such a way as to include entire filter surface into nozzle operation zone during the cleaning procedure.

    Vacuum cleaning has several advantages against mechanical cleaning:
    • faster and more efficient process;
    • less wear of wire cloth thanks to elimination of mechanical impact of brushes.

    Water strainers are installed within temperature range of – 10oС to +230oС. This is a high performance filter of conventional design which does not require additional systems or chemical substances for use. Relative simple cleaning is one of the advantages of flanged filters.
